Annual Ale Tasting
Keeping Tradition alive in Coleshill
Cllr Caroline Symonds – Mayor of Coleshill
Being Mayor is not all meetings and civic duties, occasionally we are allowed to have some fun too. Over the last five years, Coleshill has brought back the tradition of the annual Ale Tasting. Where a group of ‘Tasters’ appointed by the Town Council are deployed on behalf of the residents to ensure the quality of the Ale being served by the local Publicans.
Centuries ago the purpose was an important health and safety check on the ale being sold in the area. Towns and cities had their own Ale tasters. It’s a ceremonial role and the tasters are dressed flamboyantly, entering into the establishment and announcing their presence.
Years ago as the majority of residents were unable to read, if the Ale was deemed to be ‘good drinking’ the pub would be presented with a sprig of evergreen to hang on the door, this was a symbol to the public that the ale was safe at this establishment.
This year we will be continuing the tradition on Friday 18th November, whilst checking the quality of the ale we will be collecting for Warwickshire Search and Rescue.
