Residents and staff at St Joseph’s care home are looking to a brighter future after receiving the first round of Covid vaccinations. 

The care home, which is managed by local charity Father Hudson’s Care, began rolling out vaccinations at the start of January. A family member of one resident described it as “a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Deputy manager, Annie Frost, said, “The majority of residents have received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Those residents who couldn’t have it will receive the AstraZeneca vaccine instead. I am in contact with the coordinator of vaccinations in care homes at North Warwickshire CCG to arrange dates for the second vaccines for residents and those who couldn’t receive the Pfizer vaccine.

“A number of staff have received the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccine and some staff have received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Hazelwood surgery are working to arrange dates for staff to receive their second vaccine for those that haven’t had this. It’s a very emotional time, it’s a huge relief.”

Family members of people living at the home have expressed their gratitude to the home and to the NHS for acting swiftly to begin vaccinations at the home. One said, “This is fabulous news. Thank you all for taking such good care of our relatives. Hopefully this is the start of a brighter year.”

Despite the Covid restrictions, the home has managed to welcome several new residents over the last year as well as people who have come for a respite stay. This has been achieved through a strict isolation procedure to safeguard vulnerable residents. Prospective residents must have a negative Covid test before coming to the home. They must then isolate for two weeks on arrival. 

Registered manager, Shelley Perryman, said, “Everyone is made aware of the isolation procedure when they first enquire about coming here so they know what to expect from the outset. Everyone we’ve spoken to has been happy with that. They know we’re doing everything we can to keep their loved ones safe.”
